The Great Madras is a three month old newly furnished 4-stars boutique hotel (with hostel rooms!) originally known as Madras Hotel Tekka. Made up of 35 rooms, both private and shared, with a cafe, barbershop, laundromat, and a rooftop pool bathed in sunshine, The Great Madras is located in the heart of Little India in Singapore.
The lobby is an open-air concept clad in a vibrant tropical print wallpaper. On the left side is a small reception counter for checking in, and on the left is a bistro welcoming walk-in guests as well. There is also an on-site barbershop courtesy of The Golden Rule Barber, where a full cut and wash starts from SGD48.
There are six types of room to choose from: eight hostel rooms – three of which are female-only – occupy the first level. On the upper floors is an assortment of rooms, including The Great Suite, which features an open-concept bathroom, as well as The Balcony Room, which has an outdoor balcony.
We got a Deluxe Hostel room which is only 8 m² just enough for a queen-sized bed. The room is equipped with a safe, adjustable table lamp, TV screen (which you can connect to your YouTube/ Netflix account), charging points, 2 bottles of water. We were also given toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste and comb) in a cute brown envelop during check-in. There are 3 shared bathrooms with hot shower, shampoo and body gel. We booked our room from here.
Apart from a few instagrammable spots within the vicinity, don’t forget to check out the outdoor pool. It is nothing compare to an infinity pool, but nice enough to make it look like your own private pool.
All rooms come with complimentary buffet breakfast, but don’t get too excited yet…this is actually the most disappointing part of the stay. Breakfast is pretty simple with some juice, tea & coffee, self-service toast with a few variety of spreads..cereals & milk…fried potatoes and ….baked eggs?
Luckily in Little India, there are a lot of cheap eateries within walking distance for another round of breakfast!
The Great Madras is arguably one of Singapore’s most instagrammable hotels at the moment, and if you’re looking for a quick getaway that allows you to have the best naan and curry in town, and 24-hours shopping in Mustafa, this is a good one.
